Dr. Lawrence Garetto is jointly appointed as professor of Oral Pathology, Medicine, and Radiology at Indiana University School of Dentistry and professor of Cellular/Integrative Physiology at the Indiana University School of Medicine. He received a Bachelor’s degree from the University of California, San Diego’s Revelle College, a Master’s degree from Boston University’s Sargent College, and his Ph.D. in physiology from the Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Garetto completed a fellowship in Clinical Ethics at the Charles Warren Fairbanks Center for Medical Ethics and was the founding chair of the IUSD Professional Conduct Committee.

He also serves as the adviser to IUSD’s Student Professionalism and Ethics Club, to the newly formed national Student Professionalism and Ethics Association, and continues to serve as adviser to the Student Professional Conduct Committee, a peer review group in the School of Dentistry. He is past-president of the American Society for Dental Ethics and represented the society as the ethics liaison to the Board of Regents of the American College of Dentists. Dr. Garetto’s scholarly work centers on the early development of critical thinking/clinical reasoning skills and on competency measures for professional and clinical ethics.
