Lawrence J. Brandt MD

Dr. Lawrence J. Brandt is Professor of Medicine and Surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and Emeritus Chief of Gastroenterology at Montefiore Medical Center. Among his contributions to Gastroenterology are: establishment of the ASGE Learning Corner; the first endoscopic removal of a gastric polyp; demonstration that metronidazole can heal perineal Crohn's disease; development of a cytology balloon for the diagnosis of esophagitis in AIDS patients; classification of ischemic colitis; elucidation that isolated right-sided ischemic colitis has a worse prognosis than ischemic colitis in any other location; and the use of colonoscopic fecal transplantation to treat recurring C. difficile colitis.

His current interests are C. difficile infection, fecal microbiota transplantation, ischemic bowel disease, IBS, IBD, and colitis. The author or editor of more than 750 scientific publications and seven books, Dr. Brandt currently is one of the editors of Sleisenger and Fordtran’s Gastroenterology and Liver Disease textbook, and just completed serving for 10 years as Associate Editor for the Focal Points section of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy; he also has served on the editorial boards of numerous other journals.

Dr. Brandt is a Master of the American College of Gastroenterology and has received many awards and honors, including the Distinguished Educator Award from both the American Gastroenterological Association and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the Clinical Achievement award of the American College of Gastroenterology, and the William Dock M.D. Master Teacher Award in Medicine of SUNY (Downstate).

Dr. Brandt is a member of Albert Einstein’s Leo M. Davidoff Society for excellence in teaching of medical students and was named the Montefiore Staff and Alumni Association's Honoree in 1999. Since 1994, he has been listed every year in Best Doctors in America. He earned his bachelor’s degree from College of the City of New York and his medical degree from State University of New York Downstate Medical Center.
