Laura P. James MD

Dr. Laura James has been a member of the UAMS faculty since 1994. She is a pediatric toxicologist and pharmacologist and has worked across the translational research spectrum in the field of acetaminophen toxicity. In her early career, she worked with other pediatric pharmacologists across the United States through the NICHD funded Network of Pediatric Pharmacology Research Units to expand pediatric labeling for drugs widely used in children. She has held continuous funding from NIDDK on studies of acetaminophen toxicity and currently holds an STTR grant to develop a new clinical diagnostic test for acetaminophen liver injury.

She serves as the Principal Investigator for the UAMS Clinical and Translational Sciences Award (CTSA), which was renewed in July 2019 for a five-year award of 24 Million. The CTSA provides research services and support for UAMS faculty on the main campus in Little Rock, UAMS-Northwest, Arkansas Children’s Research Institute, and the Central Arkansas Veterans Administration Service. Dr. James also co-directs the Idea States Pediatrics Clinical Trials Network program at ACRI. She graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 1989 and completed her pediatrics residency at UAMS and Arkansas Children’s in 1992. She completed a fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine at the University of Alabama in Birmingham in 1994.
