Laura-Isobel Mccall work addresses some of the major challenges in parasitic diseases, by combining basic biological approaches to investigate disease determinants with applications for vaccine and drug development. She use modern proteomic and genomic techniques in combination with molecular biology experiments to identify virulence factors in the protozoan parasites Trypanosoma cruzi and Leishmania, causative agents of American trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis, respectively. She also a member of a large team effort to identify and develop compounds active against several neglected tropical diseases, including leishmaniasis, Chagas disease, and sleeping sickness. Finally, her work also has implications for vaccine and diagnostic test development
