Laura Bull PhD, RDN

Laura Bull, PhD is a Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and a leading researcher in human genetics and hepatology. Her work focuses on uncovering the genetic mechanisms underlying liver diseases, particularly cholestatic disorders, through the study of both human patients and animal models.

Dr. Bull earned her PhD in Biochemistry from UCSF and has built an internationally recognized research program dedicated to understanding the biology of the liver in health and disease. Her laboratory investigates the genetic basis of hereditary cholestatic liver disorders, including progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC), intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, familial hypercholanemia, and lymphedema-cholestasis syndrome. Her pioneering research has contributed to the discovery of key disease-causing genes and has advanced knowledge of liver function, bile acid metabolism, and genetic modifiers of liver disease.

In addition to her research leadership, Dr. Bull is actively involved in collaborative national and international studies aimed at improving the diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of patients with rare and inherited liver disorders. Through her contributions to genetics, hepatology, and translational medicine, she continues to drive innovations that bridge fundamental science and patient care.
