Dr Barisoni is a Board certified renal pathologist with 20 years experience in anatomic pathology. She has earned her Doctor in Medicine at the University of Milan, Italy and completed her residency program at the University of Milan as well as at Columbia University, New York. She continued her education at the NIH, NIDDK and John Hopkins University.
Dr Barisoni has served as Director of the Renal Pathology and Immunofluorescence Service at New York University, first as an Assistant and then Associate Professor of Pathology and Medicine. She has recently joined the Department of Pathology at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine as a full Professor of Pathology and Division Chief, Renal Pathology Service. Her clinical expertise includes native and transplant kidney biopsy interpretation, amyloid characterization, immunofluorescence interpretation for skin biopsies.
Dr Barisoni is an internationally recognized expert renal pathologist and an active member of the Renal Pathology Society, where she served for several years in the Board of Directors. She is also an active member of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, International Society of Nephrology and American Society of Nephrology.
Dr Barisoni is coauthor of over 50 publications and book chapters. She has made tremendous contributions in the classification and understanding of nephrotic syndrome and renal genetic and metabolic disorders. She is actively involved in NIH sponsored grants on podocytopathies and clinical trials on nephrotic syndrome and Fabry’s disease. She also has remarkable teaching experience at numerous national and international courses in renal pathology, cofounder and co-director of the International Summer School of Renal Pathology (www.issrp.com), and is invited speaker at national and international meetings.
