Kurt B. Nolte, MD, Chief Medical Investigator, Distinguished Professor of Pathology and Radiology, received his undergraduate and medical education at the University of Pennsylvania and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. After an internship in internal medicine at Pennsylvania Hospital, he spent a year in the Indian Health Service as a general practitioner. He resumed his training with residencies in anatomic pathology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Pennsylvania Hospital. He received his forensic pathology training at the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Dr. Nolte is board certified in anatomic and forensic pathology.

Dr. Nolte has served as the Chief Medical Investigator since 2014. He is formerly the Director of the UNM Radiology-Pathology Center for Forensic Imaging where he was engaged in radiologic imaging research projects sponsored by the National Institute of Justice. His other academic interests also include surveillance for infectious disease mortality, autopsy biosafety, the epidemiology and pathology of drug abuse, the relationship between alcohol intoxication and suicide, and prevention of out-of-hospital trauma mortality. He is active in the National Association of Medical Examiners where he was the Executive Vice President from 2009-2015.
