Dr. Kristen Atkins is an associate professor of Pathology at the University of Virginia (UVA) with particular interests in women’s oncology and cytopathology. She entered academics primarily for teaching opportunities and was recently awarded the Master Educator Award for graduate medical education at UVA. She has given many workshops, teleconferences, and national meeting presentations on a variety of cytopathology topics and this is her second year directing this course. For the USCAP Diagnostic Cytopathology course she strives to bring together a dynamic group of faculty with different but complementary teaching styles to engage attendees. Dr. Atkins is interested in communication styles and personality traits, and often weaves these into her talks about challenges with preliminary interpretations and triaging tissue while interacting with various clinicians and staff. Outside of pathology she enjoys being with her family, reading novels (the quirkier the better), hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and building with clay.
