Dr. Kjeld Soballe worked as a carpenter for a few years before he started in high school which he completed in two years. He finished medical school at the University of Aarhus, Denmark in 1982, and became a specialist in orthopedic surgery in 1994. In 1994 he defended his doctoral thesis: Hydroxyapatite Ceramic Coating for Bone Implant Fixation. In 1999 he became a Full Professor in Orthopaedic Surgery and the same year Chief Surgeon and Head of Division for Hip Surgery at AarhusUniversity Hospital, Denmark. He further improved his clinical experience at HCMC, Minneapolis, Minnesota USA, where he completed a clinical fellowship with a full year of hands-on surgical training in hip surgery.

He has a broad background in orthopedic surgery and has specialized in hip surgery, particularly total hip arthroplasty, joint preserving procedures (PAO), and revision arthroplasty. For the past 25 years, he has solely concentrated on hip surgery. He has developed a new minimally invasive approach for periacetabular osteotomy (PAO), which is known worldwide. He is, as a full professor, responsible for education and research at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and has been a supervisor on more than 70 Ph.D. studies and about 10 ongoing Ph.D. studies. He has published more than 400 papers in peer-reviewed journals with current research interests in clinical studies of total joints, joint preserving hip surgery, epidemiology of osteoarthritis, clinical databases, fast-track programs, and health economic research.
