Prof. Kishwar Azad, is the Project Director of BADAS-Perinatal Care Project (PCP), a collaborative programme between the Diabetic Association of Bangladesh (BADAS), UCL Institute of Global Health, and Women and Children First, UK. She is Prof. of Paediatrics, Ibrahim Medical College and Senior Hony. Consultant, Dept.of Paediatrics, BIRDEM Hospital. She founded the department of Paediatrics and Neonatology at BIRDEM.
Her main interests include neonatal, child and maternal health, and childhood diabetes. She is involved in research aimed at creating low cost innovative solutions, primarily involving women’s groups, to improve neonatal , child, and maternal health. This multi country partnership is led by Prof. Anthony Costello and has created impressive impact in the areas of neonatal and maternal health in resource poor countries. Other research interests include epidemiology and aetiology of childhood diabetes in Bangladesh, and fetal origins of adult disease.
Dr. Azad has numerous publications on neonatal health, diabetes , health systems in peer reviewed journals. She is providing the lead in PCP for projects funded by DFID,UK , WHO, and European Commission and has led projects funded by Big Lottery, the Wellcome Trust, Saving Newborn Lives and the Higher Education Link Programme of the British Council.
Prof. Azad is a member of several professional organisations and was President of Bangladesh Neonatal Forum. She lends her expertise to the development of strategies and guidelines on issues relating to child and maternal health and childhood and adolescent diabetes. Prof. Kishwar Azad was awarded Honorary Fellowship from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health in June 2012. She was made Honorary Senior Research Associate, University College London, UK.
