Dr. Kirsten Tolstrup is a Noninvasive Cardiologist and Professor with special interests in echocardiography (ultrasound of the heart) and valvular and structural heart disease at the University of California San Francisco. To evaluate cardiovascular disease in general and valvular heart disease in particular, she uses specialized echocardiographic techniques – such as transthoracic, transesophageal, and three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography, as well as echocardiography performed with supine bicycle stress testing. She serves as the associate chief of cardiology for ambulatory services.

Tolstrup also works closely with the interventional team on catheter-based procedures such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement and MitraClip, a less-invasive option for patients with a leaky mitral valve.

Tolstrup's research focuses on implementing new noninvasive cardiology procedures and developing multidisciplinary team approaches to cardiovascular care.

Tolstrup earned her medical degree at the University of Copenhagen, where she completed training in orthopedic surgery and trauma medicine. She also completed a residency in internal medicine at the Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center and a fellowship in cardiovascular medicine at the University of New Mexico.
