Kiara's PhD work, supported by a Doctoral Canada Graduate Scholarship (SSHRC), examined the ways in which frontline practitioners and post-secondary students talk about men’s perpetration of sexual assault against women and the implications that follow. Kiara says that being able to blend this research background with teaching and learning leaves her living the dream. She reports that doing this kind of work is something she has wanted to do since taking her first series of workshops years ago at (what was then) the Teaching and Learning Centre at the U of C.
Kiara credits the learning she has done at the TI with the success of the last course she taught (offered in the Spring of 2016). In the 2017 University Rankings Issue, Maclean’s magazine listed her course, Talk About Sexual Assault, as one of the University of Calgary’s “Coolest Courses.” Kiara has since done several guest presentations about the planning and design that went into developing the course, and lectures and facilitates workshops that builds on aspects of it. Kiara is currently working with a group of undergraduate students from this class on a reflective self-study.
