Dr. Carlson graduated from medical school at the University of British Columbia. He completed his urology residency at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and fellowship training in pelvic reconstructive surgery, voiding dysfunction, neuro-urology, and urodynamics at New York University Medical Center in New York City. He is currently Clinical Associate Professor and Chief of Urology in the Department of Surgery at the University of Calgary and Fellowship Director for Reconstructive and Functional Urology.
Dr. Carlson is co-founder and director of vesia [Alberta Bladder Centre], and a member of the board of the Prostate Cancer Foundation. He has spearheaded the development of numerous national education programs for physicians, and he has also co-founded a number of internet-based medical education and communication products.
