Kerry Litchfield

Dr. Litchfield has been a Consultant Anaesthetist with a special interest in obstetric anaesthesia based at Glasgow Royal Infirmary for 8 years, having previously worked abroad and elsewhere in the UK.

Kerry is the clinical lead for the obstetric anaesthetic high risk clinic in the hospital and is working with other units to develop a Scotland-wide approach to providing quality HDU care in the obstetric units. The aim being to keep mother and baby together while being cared for by appropriately trained staff and audited at a national level.

She regularly supervise trainees’ audit and research and am an educational supervisor. Since her appointment she has been an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at Glasgow University department of Anaesthesia and contributes to undergraduate and post graduate teaching.

In addition to her educational supervisor role, she is a clinical supervisor and rota organiser for obstetric trainees and as such has good understanding of the tensions involved in order to balance quality training and service provision.

She has the opportunity to contribute to the promotion of anaesthesia by sitting on local and national committees including the executive for the Scottish Society of Anaesthetists, West of Scotland Obstetric Anaesthetists and Scottish Society of Acute Pain Services.

Kerry has been an ardent supporter of the OAA and believe it is succeeding in its aims to educate anaesthetists, support mothers and inform public opinion. She believes that we should pursue a more collaborative approach to working with our obstetric and midwifery colleagues on a national level, as we are striving to do locally. The landscape of the practice is continually changing and posing new challenges. How do we remain abreast of these changes; by looking to national collaboration? We should continue to lead the way in translating research and expert opinion into practical, usable information to support decision making at a local level.
