After completing college at the University of Arizona, Dr. Kenneth L. Reed attended dental school at the Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) School of Dentistry in Portland, Oregon, earning a DMD degree. After completing dental school, Dr. Reed remained at OHSU where he received advanced training in anesthesia and also completed a residency in periodontology and later completed a CODA-approved dental anesthesia residency at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY.

Dr. Reed practiced periodontics in Tucson, AZ for over a decade while also providing anesthesia services to his patients. Over 20 years ago Dr. Reed began providing anesthesia services to other dentists in the state of Arizona and continues to do so today, having given up periodontics in 2001.

Dr. Reed is on faculty at a teaching hospital and two dental schools. Most of his time is devoted to teaching residents through NYU Langone Hospitals - Brooklyn. There he is the Associate Program Director of the Dental Anesthesia residency and also serves as an Attending in Anesthesiology in the Dental Anesthesiology, Advanced Education in General Dentistry, and Graduate Pediatric dental residencies. 

Dr. Reed is an Affiliate Assistant Professor in the Department of Periodontology at The Oregon Health & Science University School of Dentistry and he serves as a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Dentistry at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Dr. Reed is a Past President of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology (ADSA). He is a Diplomate of the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology (ADBA) and serves on the Board of Directors of the ADBA as Secretary.

As an author, Dr. Reed has published five textbook chapters in Sedation: A Guide to Patient Management. Two chapters were in the 4th ed. The first was entitled “The Physically Compromised Patient” and the second, “Neurologic Illnesses and Other Conditions.” Three chapters were in the 5th edition of the same text, “The Physically Compromised Patient,” “Neurologic Illnesses and Other Conditions” and “The Geriatric Patient.”

Dr. Reed partnered with Dr. Okundaye to author two additional textbook chapters, “Working with a Dentist Anesthesiologist” and “Management of Emergencies Associated with Sedation”, both in Behavior Management in Dentistry for Children. The third edition of this textbook has now been published with both chapters having been updated. He also partnered with Dr. Roy Stevens in authoring Anesthetic Adversity: Failed Sedation in Anesthesia Complications in the Dental Office, edited by Bosack & Lieblich. Dr. Reed has further contributed to the professional literature by publishing over two dozen articles in peer-reviewed journals.
