Dr. Scalapino's research focused on understanding the role of regulatory T cells in autoimmune diseases, in particular in models of systemic lupus erythematosus. Dr. Scalapino's academic activities are now divided between clinician-educator and lead physician on a VA funded special project team focused on improving care delivery. He precepts rheumatology fellows and medical residents in the VA outpatient rheumatology continuity clinic and inpatient consult service. He is interested in curriculum development to improve resident training in rheumatology and fellows' effective learning of musculoskeletal radiology.

He serves as a mentor to rheumatology fellows interested in VA clinical research and quality improvement projects. As a lead physician on the VA project team based in the VA's Portland Center for Evaluation of Clinical Services (PCECS), he collaborates with health science researchers, informaticists, and data analysts to optimize the efficiency and quality of healthcare delivery to veterans. His team is currently studying cancer care delivery and is developing systems to improve it which will have wide application including to rheumatology care delivery.
