Kenneth Walker MD

Kenneth Walker studied medicine at the University of Aberdeen and then from 1991 to 2002 in Glasgow he trained as a General and Colorectal Surgeon and undertook an MD research thesis. He enjoyed a further fellowship at the University of Sydney, then by way of contrast he and the family spent one and a half years in Nepal, where he was a surgeon and trainer in a mission hospital, before returning to Scotland.

He was attracted to the setup in Inverness and its hospital, and in 2004 was thrilled to obtain a consultant post there. Alongside clinical interests in the surgery of colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and pelvic floor, he enjoyed caring about the trainees and grew an interest in their education.

Since 2010 Ken has been Associate Postgraduate Dean for surgical specialties in the North of Scotland. Increasingly the focus is on integrating Simulation into surgical training - both technical skills and human factors. He directs Highland Surgical Boot Camps, supervises a Simulation Research Fellow, teaches courses elsewhere, and has kept a careful interest in surgical training in Asia. It is this work that the University of Stirling is facilitating with a Chair of Surgical Training.

Outside of work, Ken's wife is an artist and their 3 children are at school in Inverness. He enjoys the outdoors, church-based groups, and playing the fiddle.
