Kelvin Kong is a descendant of the Worimi people of Port Stephens, north of Newcastle, New South Wales. He is a qualified surgeon specialising in paediatric and adult otolaryngology, head and neck surgery, working predominantly on Awabakal Country for the Hunter New England Local Health District and also in private practice. Associate Professor Kong is also active in lecturing and teaching allied health professionals, medical students, and both unaccredited and advanced medical and surgical trainees.

After completing a Bachelor of Medicine, Kelvin furthered his studies and graduated from the University of New South Wales in 1999 with a Bachelor of Surgery. He then went on to pursue a career in surgery, completing his resident medical officer and registrar positions at various urban and rural attachments. Kelvin is an active member of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Australian Society of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, serving on the Indigenous Health and Fellowship Services Committees. He has also served time as a board member of the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence, Australian Hearing and the Australian Indigenous Doctors Association.

Associate Professor Kong has a diverse practise and interests in paediatrics, paediatric airway, adult and paediatric cochlear implantation, voice and swallow disorders and head and neck cancer management. He is a strong advocate for equity in ear health for all Australians.In 2007, Kelvin qualified as the first Aboriginal Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, specialising in otolaryngology, head and neck surgery
