Kelvin Foong Weng Chiong BDS, MDS, M Orth RCS, FAMS, FDS RCS, PhD

Dr. Kelvin Foong is an Associate Professor and Director of the Discipline of Orthodontics and Paediatric Dentistry in the NUS Faculty of Dentistry. He joined the Faculty of Dentistry in 1994 and has served as its Vice-Dean (Academic Affairs), Vice-Dean (Research), and Sub-Dean over a continuous 15-plus years from 2001 to 2016. He graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1988 with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery. He received specialty training in Orthodontics and obtained the Masters in Dental Surgery (Orthodontics) from The University of Adelaide, South Australia in 1994. He subsequently received the Diploma of Membership in Orthodontics from the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) in 1996. His research interest in surgical outcomes on cleft infants led to a Ph.D. in 2005 from NUS. Kelvin is also an alumnus of Wharton School, the University of Pennsylvania after completing the Advanced Management Program in 2013 under the Academic Medicine Development Award awarded by the National University Health System.

He teaches Orthodontics at the postgraduate and undergraduate levels. He is the Director of the Orthodontics Residency Programme since 2000 which trains future specialists in Orthodontics. His academic interests focus on decision-making. In education research, he explores the cognitive factors influencing the transition in learning from novice to expert. In 2016, he secured a Programmatic Grant, as the Lead Principal Investigator, under the MOE Tertiary Education Research Fund to explore the influence of feedback from eye movements on X-ray reading performance. His other substantial research interest is in medical imaging. He works with a multi-disciplinary team to develop virtual patient-specific anatomic models to facilitate sound clinical-decision making. As a Senior Consultant specializing in Orthodontics, his clinical service at the National University Hospital focuses on the orthodontic management of children and adult patients with substantial dentofacial deformities.
