Kelly Metcalfe RN, PhD

Dr. Kelly Metcalfe completed her undergraduate nursing degree in 1996 at the University of Western Ontario and then completed her PhD in Medical Science at the University of Toronto in 2002. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing at the University of Toronto, and an adjunct scientist at the Women’s College Research Institute. She is currently the Interim Director of Research in the Faculty of Nursing.

Dr. Metcalfe’s clinical work focuses on counseling women who are genetically predisposed to breast cancer in making breast cancer prevention decisions. Her current research focuses on the prevention and treatment of hereditary breast cancer, and on the surgical outcomes after breast cancer surgery and reconstruction.

Dr. Metcalfe is currently funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, and the Canadian Cancer Society. She has published over 60 papers in prestigious journals including the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Clinical Genetics, and the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Of important note, her work has direct clinical relevance. For example, her studies related to risk estimates for primary and contralateral breast cancer risk and ovarian cancer risk are regularly used to counsel women with a BRCA mutation who are making medical management decisions.
