Kathrin Matthias studied human medicine at the Georg-August-University Goettingen from 1999 to 2006 and received her doctorate in 2011 in the Department of Hematology and Internal Oncology.

Kathrin Matthias first completed her internal training at the Katharinenhospital in Stuttgart in the clinic for general internal medicine, gastroenterology, hepatology, and infectiology and then switched to the Hannover Medical School (MHH) in 2009. Here, in the clinic for hematology, haemostaseology, oncology, and stem cell transplantation, further training to become a specialist in internal medicine and hematology and internal oncology took place until 2014.

In addition, in 2015 an additional qualification in palliative medicine was acquired. From 2015 to 2019, Kathrin Matthias completed a part-time master's degree in palliative care at the Albert Ludwigs University in Freiburg. She has been a member of the Clinical Ethics Committee (KEK) of the MHH since 2015.

Kathrin Matthias' clinical focus is on palliative medicine. Since 2016 she has been the medical director of the MHH palliative care unit and implemented the interdisciplinary palliative care service. Since 2021, Kathrin Matthias has also been employed at the Institute for General Medicine and Palliative Medicine, where she is responsible in particular for the palliative outpatient clinic.
