Kathleen is a bedside nightshift ICU nurse, also taking roles as charge nurse, preceptor, and mentor. The interplay of palliative and critical care has been her primary area of focus.

At UCSF, Kathleen works with the ICU Palliative Care Committee, a multidisciplinary work/study group seeking to infuse palliative practice into the ICU. She teaches end-of-life nursing to novice ICU nurses and communication skills to experienced ICU clinicians. In the medical/surgical ICU at UCSF, she coordinates the Bereavement Program, which follows families of all deceased patients who for the first year after death. Kathleen is currently involved in projects bridging palliative and critical care with the four other UC medical centers and with the Libretto ICU Consortium.
