Kathleen Irwin is a Medical Officer for the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force Program. She came to AHRQ from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta where she led teams that developed evidence-based recommendations about the prevention of healthcare-associated infections and HIV. She has served as Chief of the Health Services Research Branch, Division of STD Prevention, as a medical epidemiologist in the Divisions of HIV/AIDS Prevention and Reproductive Health, and as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer.

on HIV, STD, viral hepatitis, and cervical cancer, including evaluations of adherence to HIV, STD, and cervical cancer screening guidelines. From 2006-2011, she led the development of global recommendations for human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines at the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, Switzerland and promoted HPV vaccine introduction and monitoring at WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer. She is board-certified in Preventive Medicine and Public Health and is a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America. She practiced primary care at Grady Hospital clinics and served as Adjunct Associate Professor at Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University, both in Atlanta. She graduated from Brown University (B.A.), Boston University (M.D.), and University of Washington (M.P.H.).
