Kathleen Carey is a Health Economist and a Professor in the Department of Health Law, Policy and Management. Her scholarship addresses the economics, organization, and regulation of the U.S. health care system, with a focus on efficient delivery of care in the hospital, ambulatory surgery, and community health center sectors. Her work has addressed issues of cost, managed care, competition, organizational structure, and collaboration, appearing regularly in leading peer-reviewed journals. As principal investigator, she has been the recipient of numerous federal and private research grants and has developed state-of-the-art econometric models that evaluate U.S. health care policy. Dr. Carey is a member of the Massachusetts Public Health Council, where she holds the governor-appointed seat representing the Massachusetts Coalition for the Prevention of Medical Errors. Dr. Carey serves as Associate Editor of Medical Care Research and Review and is a member of the board of directors of the National Business and Economics Society. She is a past standing member of the Health Systems and Value Research Scientific Review Committee at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and has served on numerous other national and international review committees including the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, VA Health Services Research & Development, the UK Economic and Social Research Council, and the National Medical Research Council of Singapore. Dr. Carey received her Ph.D. in Economics from Boston University and holds an M.A.T. from Harvard University.
