Katherine Schuver Garman MD

Katherine Schuver Garman, MD, is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology at Duke University School of Medicine. She serves as Vice Chief for Research in the Division of Gastroenterology and is a member of the Duke Cancer Institute, the Duke Molecular Physiology Institute, and an affiliate of the Duke Regeneration Center.

Dr. Garman earned her MD from Duke University School of Medicine and completed her Internal Medicine residency, Chief Residency, and Gastroenterology fellowship training at Duke. She has spent her academic career advancing clinical, translational, and laboratory-based research focused on gastrointestinal disease and cancer prevention.

Her research centers on injury, repair, metaplasia, and cancer development within the gastrointestinal tract. Dr. Garman’s work investigates conditions including Barrett’s esophagus, Helicobacter pylori infection, autoimmune gastritis, gastric intestinal metaplasia, and gastrointestinal cancer prevention. Using clinical data, patient-derived tissue samples, and organoid models, her laboratory seeks to better understand disease mechanisms and identify strategies for early detection and intervention.

A nationally recognized physician-scientist and mentor, Dr. Garman leads multiple federally funded research initiatives and has been honored for her commitment to mentorship and academic medicine, including receiving the 2025 Neil L. Spector Art of Medicine Award. Through her clinical care, research leadership, and educational efforts, she remains dedicated to improving outcomes for patients with gastrointestinal and precancerous conditions.
