Dr. Kate Gowans, MD, has been practicing pediatric hematology/oncology since 2000 when she began her fellowship training. She is the Section Head Pediatric, Adolescent and Young Adults Hematology and Oncology at Beaumont Health. When she began her career, the phrase “adolescent and young adult oncology” didn’t even exist. She, and the team at Beaumont Children’s, was excited to have Beaumont’s Adolescent and Young Adult Program (AYA) created through a generous donation by the Gilbert family. Its purpose is to provide the necessary support to the AYA population, in the form of cutting edge treatments, access to AYA specific clinical trials, and outstanding psychosocial support.

Dr. Gowans is almost a lifelong Michigander, having grown up in central Michigan. She is an avid Spartan fan having completed her undergraduate degree at Michigan State University. She completed medical school at Wayne State University, followed by residency training at DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, and finally fellowship training at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. From there she spent nearly ten years at Cleveland Clinic Children’s, where she was the fellowship training program director for pediatric oncology. She returned to Michigan in 2013, as the head of pediatric hematology/oncology at Beaumont Children’s. Since that time, she helped launch our AYA program, and also moved into a beautiful new clinic space, located directly above Beaumont’s Proton Therapy Center in Royal Oak. When away from work, Dr. Gowans enjoys any time spent with her family, particularly when it involves traveling together to new or familiar places. She loves watching Tiger baseball, Spartan football and basketball, traveling, moon gazing, eating delicious food, and relaxing near beautiful bodies of water.
