Karl Mann was appointed the first chair of Addiction Research in Germany in 1999 and held this position at the University of Heidelberg until he retired in 2014. At the same time, he was Medical Director of the Department for Addictive Behaviour and Addiction Medicine at the Central Institute of Mental Health, Mannheim (CIMH). In 2007 he served as Acting Director of the CIMH. From 2006 – to 2014 he was Deputy Director of the CIMH. In 2016 the rector of Heidelberg University appointed him as Senior Professor.
K. Mann received his M.D. at the University of Mainz in 1977 and his habilitation at the University of Tuebingen in 1990. He was a research fellow in the United States and in Paris. He holds a Board Certification for Neurology, Psychiatry & Psychotherapy.
His research interest is in mechanisms of addictive behaviors and in randomized controlled treatment trials focussing on alcoholism and gambling disorders. His main research methods are neuroimaging (structural and functional), genetics, and psychopharmacology. This work and its policy implications were published in more than 500 papers and 20 books. He was ranked 3rd in the list of most productive alcohol researchers in 2005 – 2009 (Gonzales-Alcaide et al., 2012)
