Karl Christian Broich MD, PhD

Prof. Dr. med. Karl Christian Broich is a distinguished German physician and regulatory leader, currently serving as President of the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) in Bonn, Germany — the national authority responsible for regulating medicines and medical devices. He has led the institute since 2014, having previously served as Vice President and held various leadership roles within the organization.

Dr. Broich studied human medicine at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn from 1979 to 1985 and completed specialist training in neurology and psychotherapy at the university’s clinics. Early in his career, he engaged in clinical and research work in neurology and psychiatry, including a research stay at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, focusing on advanced imaging techniques. Since 200,2 he has also acted as a lecturer and supervisor in cognitive behavioral therapy and is an honorary professor at the University of Bonn’s Medical Faculty.

At BfArM, Dr. Broich’s responsibilities encompass broad oversight of drug and device regulation, ensuring safety, efficacy, and public health protection. Under his leadership, the institute has contributed to regulatory decision-making and innovation in areas such as clinical trial methodology, pharmacovigilance, and the integration of modern scientific tools into regulatory practices.

Dr. Broich is actively involved in the European regulatory network, serving as a member of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) Management Board and the Heads of Medicines Agencies (HMA) Management Group. He also co-chairs strategic expert groups, including the Executive Steering Group on Shortages and Safety of Medicinal Products, the Darwin EU Advisory Board, and the Network Data Steering Group (NDSG) of the EMA.
