Karim Mekhail PhD

Dr. Karim Mekhail is an Associate Professor (Tenured) and Canada Research Chair in Spatial Genome Organization at the University of Toronto. His laboratory studies the impact of spatial genome organization, non-coding RNA-DNA hybrids, and the environment on genome expression and stability. His group is especially interested in exploring the role of these processes in aging, neurodegeneration and cancer. Dr. Mekhail received numerous awards including the Canada Governor General Gold Medal in the Sciences, the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) Maud-Menten New Investigator Prize, and the CIHR Lap-Chee Tsui Prize. Before moving to Toronto, Dr. Mekhail completed a postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. Danesh Moazed of Harvard Medical School and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in 2009. Dr. Mekhail received his Ph.D. in 2006 under the supervision of Dr. Stephen Lee of the U. of Ottawa and U. of Miami.
