Karen Madsen PhD

Dr. Karen Madsen is Professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and Co-director of the Center of Excellence for Gastrointestinal Inflammation and Immunity Research (with over $13M in funding). Her research interests include understanding the role of intestinal permeability and gut microbes in human disease, how to design treatments aimed at modulating the gut microbiota to enhance human health, and how microbes interact with and modulate host epithelial and immune cell activity. She is currently carrying out bench research using animal models of disease as well as several clinical trials aimed at modulating the gut microbiota including the use of diet and fecal microbial transplantation.
