Karen is currently the President of the Australian Hand Therapy Association and Chair of the management committee for the AHTA. Karen has been working in private practice for over 25 years after receiving a scholarship from LaTrobe University to study hand therapy in Europe. Karen was a member of the inaugural Ministerial Advisory Committee (Allied Health) at the Victorian Health Department. Karen works as a consultant to Medical Panels (WorkSafe).

Karen was admitted as a full titled member of the Australian Hand Therapy Association in 1993 and has four times been voted onto the executive of the national organisation in various roles. Karen was the convenor of the 2008 national AHTA conference in Melbourne on the topic of Occupational Injuries. Karen developed interest and expertise in Musician's Injuries working as an assistant to lead researcher, Dr Bronwen Ackermann on the "Sound Practice" research project through the University of Sydney in 2009. Karen Fitt was a finalist in the 2011 WorkSafe awards for excellence in the treating practitioner category.
