Dr. Nair’s research has originally reported that critical regulation of mitochondrial biogenesis and function depends on insulin and how insulin deficiency and insulin resistance cause dysregulation of mitochondrial function resulting in reduced ATP production and increased oxidative stress in tissues such as skeletal muscle and brain. His recent research links these altered mitochondrial abnormalities and consequently altered proteostasis to many chronic complications of diabetes including a higher prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease. He has been continuously funded by the National Institute of Health for more than three decades. He has published a total of 324 papers with 20,000 citations and a hi-index of 78.
