Dr Jyoti Baharani is a full-time consultant Physician at University Hospitals Birmingham Foundation Trust. She was appointed in 2004. She underwent undergraduate training at the University of Dundee in Scotland and completed her nephrology training in Dundee, Aberdeen, and Glasgow. She was appointed the clinical director for Renal Medicine in 2015 and is the clinical lead for pre-dialysis, home therapies, and end-of-life care. She was until recently the lead Royal College of Physicians Tutor at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital and has a post-graduate qualification in Medical education.

Baharani has pioneered the concept of shared decision-making within the Department of Nephrology and is a strong proponent of patient-centered care have introduced many new initiatives to empower renal patients and increase self-management awareness. She attributes her strong interest in this area to her early training in Nephrology when she was a single-handed registrar. Her research portfolio includes qualitative research on QOL on dialysis, acute kidney injury, infection in renal patients, HIV-Renal disease, cognition in CKD, conservative management, and end-of-life care.

Baharani has lectured previously on Acute Kidney injury at RCP regional teaching days, is a faculty member for the National Peritoneal Dialysis Academy, and conducts MDT lectures on the benefits of shared care for Haemodialysis Patients at the Yorkshire and Humber Nationwide teaching program. She is also a regular speaker on palliative care for renal patients at GP and palliative care training days.
