Jutta Gartner PhD

Jutta Gartner studied medicine at the Catholic University of Louvain in Brussels, Belgium as well as at the University of Hamburg, Germany. After successfully attaining her medical license and a doctoral degree in medicine she worked for five years at the John Hopkins Medical Institute in Baltimore, USA. She continued as a research associate and doctor at the Children’s University Hospital in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Since 2002 she has held the position of Medical Director of the Department for Paediatric and Adolescent Medicine at the University Medical Centre in Göttingen with a strong focus on pediatric neurology. She was awarded the Child Health Research Award from the National Institute of Health, USA, the Gerhard Hess Prize from the German Research Foundation and others. In 2014 she received a Reinhart Koselleck Project from the German Research Foundation for her work on childhood neurodegenerative disorders.

The main focus of her research lies in the field of neuroscience. Particular areas of interest are pediatric multiple sclerosis, leukodystrophies, and other early-onset neurodegenerative disorders. An understanding of the role of neuronal metabolic networks and neuroinflammatory processes on the structure and preservation of white and grey matter stands at the forefront of the scientific work.
