Ph.D. at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI) in 1996 on malaria molecular biology and genomics, he later changed fields to research the genetic basis of human neurological diseases. He conducted post-doctoral research at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics (Oxford, UK), which led to the identification of the gene for chorea acanthocytosis.

Justin returned to WEHI and was Project Leader of the Genes-CRC Tasmanian Multiple Sclerosis Project. In 2004, Justin established The Neurogenetics Laboratory at the Florey Neurosciences Institute and led the ANZgene MS Genetic Consortium whole genome scan, resulting in the identification of CD40 and CYP27B1 as susceptibility genes for MS. In 2009, he took a position at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), leading a programme of genetic and pharmacogenomic research supporting drug development with a particular focus on the neuroscience and infectious diseases therapy areas. He has since returned to academia and a position as Principal Research Fellow at The University of Melbourne (Department of Pathology) to build a group focussing on clinical translation of human genetics.
