June Round received her doctoral training at the University of California, Los Angeles in T cell signaling with Dr. M. Carrie Miceli. She moved to the California Institute of Technology where she performed her postdoctoral studies in the laboratory of Dr. Sarkis Mazmanian and was a Merck Fellow on the Jane Coffins Childs Postdoctoral Fellowship. There she demonstrated that a polysaccharide from the commensal bacteria Bacteroides fragilis enforced its colonization by inducing regulatory T cells.

She started her own lab in the Department of Pathology at the University of Utah with a focus on host commensal interactions. She has been the recipient of the Edward Mallinckrodt Jr. Foundation award, an NSF CAREER award, the NIH innovator award, a Pew Scholar Award, a Packard Fellow, the American Asthma Foundation Scholar and the Burrough’s Wellcome New Investigator in Pathogenesis award. Her most recent work focuses on the identification of specific microbes that protect from obesity and insulin resistance and is moving into areas related to colorectal and pancreatic cancer.
