Dr. Julius Bourke is a Consultant Neuropsychiatrist in full-time clinical practice and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer in neurophysiology and clinical psychiatry at Queen Mary University London.
He is an expert in the diagnosis and management of functional somatic syndromes (FSS), functional neurological disorders (FND), and neuropsychiatric disorders, including traumatic brain injury (TBI), which lie at the interface between general medicine, neurology, and psychiatry.
Dr. Bourke is trained and experienced in assessments for the Mental Health and Mental Capacity Acts and is an Approved Clinician in the terms of The Mental Health Act. He is experienced in medico-legal assessments and report writing and has been instructed as an independent medical examiner by insurance providers.
Dr. Bourke has been accepting medicolegal instruction in complex, serious injury and clinical negligence claims as a consultant since 2012. He has court experience. His work is split; Defendant: 10%, Claimant 90% as of September 2017.
He has successfully completed the Cardiff University Law School & Bond Solon Expert Witness qualification program (CUBS). Dr. Bourke maintains his continuing professional development as an expert witness through the attendance of appropriate meetings, courses, and lectures.
Dr. Bourke has given numerous talks and presentations on both a national and an international basis, on subjects relating to neuropsychiatric disorders (including TBI), functional presentations (FND and FSS), PTSD, and psychopharmacology. Dr. Bourke has been widely published on an array of field-related topics. He has co-authored a textbook on psychiatry and has contributed chapters to numerous others, including a world-leading textbook on internal medicine and others on functional syndromes, chronic pain, fatigue, and neuropsychiatric conditions.
