Julie C. Fanburg-smith MD, FCAP

Julie C. Fanburg-Smith, MD, FCAP, is Director of Musculoskeletal Pathology at Penn State Health, Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Penn State Children’s Hospital, where she is a Professor of Pathology, Orthopedics, and Pediatrics and signs out and performs consultation and contributes to academic research and education. She is the Vice Chair for Academic Affairs, on the Medical School Admissions and Academic Promotions Committees, and is a Senator at Penn State. A coauthor on numerous seminal publications in Bone and Soft Tissue and on multiple World Health Organization Classification books, including several editions of Bone and Soft Tissue Tumours, she is Director of the Interdisciplinary Bone, Joint and Soft Tissue Course for the International Skeletal Society (ISS), Chair of the Members Meeting for ISS, and an Officer/on the Executive Board for ISS and USCAP’s International Society for Bone and Soft Tissue Pathology.

Dr. Fanburg-Smith collaborates with various institutions on research, including a Clinical Trial sarcoma review for the Children’s Oncology Group, working with colleagues from a basic mouse model on neuropathic arthropathy to translational research, targeted therapy for fusion sarcoma. She is dedicated to academics and teaching residents, students, fellows, and staff at local, national, and international venues and institutions. In addition to her fellowship training at Massachusetts General Hospital in Bone and Soft Tissue Pathology and Surgical Pathology, Dr. Fanburg-Smith is fellowship trained in Hematopathology at the National Institutes of Health, and consults signs out and runs interdisciplinary conferences in Musculoskeletal Pathology, Hematopathology, Pediatric Pathology, Pulmonary Pathology as Unit Director, and Liver and Gastrointestinal Pathology.

Dr. Fanburg-Smith participates as an active member of the Cancer Committee for the College of American Pathologists and is responsible for the Bone and Soft Tissue Synoptic Reporting and Biomarker Protocols. She recently updated the GIST Synoptic Report and Biomarker Protocols. Dr. Fanburg-Smith is an invited member of the Arthur Purdy Stout Surgical Pathologists and the unique Washington Clinical Pathology Society, a group originating at President Lincoln’s bedside in Washington D.C.
