Julianna C. Simon received the B.S. degree in bioengineering from Washington State University, Pullman, WA, USA, in 2009, and the Ph.D. degree in bioengineering from the University of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA, in 2013. Her thesis, entitled “The Thresholds and Mechanisms of Tissue Injury by Focused Ultrasound,” included her discovery of the mechanism of tissue fractionation in boiling histotripsy and her work establishing the safety of ultrasonic propulsion of kidney stones.

In 2017, she joined The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA, USA, as an Assistant Professor of the Graduate Program in Acoustics and Biomedical Engineering. The goal of her laboratory, the Biomedical Acoustics Simon Laboratory, or BASiL, is to apply the fundamentals of acoustics to develop novel ultrasound diagnostics and therapeutics. She has coauthored 20 peer-reviewed publications and more than 115 abstracts for national and international conferences., Dr. Simon, after finishing her Ph.D., received the National Space Biomedical Research Institute's First Award Postdoctoral Fellowship to investigate kidney stone detection with ultrasound in spaceflight analogs.
