Juliane Bubeck-wardenburg MD, PhD

Juliane Bubeck-Wardenburg is a physician-scientist specializing in pediatric critical care medicine, holding the position of WashU Medicine Donald B. Strominger Professor of Pediatrics. She completed her MD and PhD at WashU Medicine in 2001 and completed her pediatric residency at the University of Chicago Children's Hospital in 2004, followed by a fellowship in pediatric critical care in 2008. In addition to her role as a professor of pediatrics, she serves as the director of the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine and the Executive Vice Chair of Pediatrics. Bubeck-Wardenburg is also a professor of Molecular Microbiology and an Associate Director at the Center for Vaccines & Immunity to Microbial Pathogens.

Her research focuses on bacterial infections and the role of bacterial cytotoxins in disease pathogenesis, utilizing a range of methods including bacterial and host genetics, in vitro analyses, and in vivo disease models. Her laboratory investigates host-pathogen interactions to identify novel targets for disease prevention and therapy. Bubeck-Wardenburg has significantly contributed to understanding bacterial infections and is particularly focused on finding new ways to treat and prevent these diseases. She is recognized for her leadership in pediatric critical care, having received the 2023 Dean’s Impact Award for her innovative contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through her research and leadership, she has become a key figure in advancing pediatric medicine and infectious disease research.
