Julian Riba studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) with a focus on control engineering, numerical mechanics, and biophysics. As part of a semester abroad and an industrial internship, he spent 6 months each at the University of Alberta in Canada and at the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) in the USA.
He graduated in 2013 with the thesis "Microfluidic Devices for 3D Cell Migration and Transport Studies in Extracellular Matrix Hydrogels". Since 2014 he has been doing his doctorate at the Professorship for Application Development and is working on single-cell printing technology. Since June 2016, he has headed the European project "Single Bacteria Genomics and MALDI-TOF" ("SiBaGem" for short) at IMTEK.
