Julian Hughes is the RICE professor of Old Age Psychiatry. He took up this post in August 2016. He was previously a consultant in old age psychiatry in North Tyneside and, prior to that, in Newcastle upon Tyne. From 2009 he was Honorary Professor of Philosophy of Ageing at Newcastle University. Julian first studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford before coming to Bristol to study Medicine. He qualified in 1988 and, having completed house jobs at Frenchay and the BRI, served in the RAF, as a GP trainee and then as a psychiatrist. He completed his higher training back in the NHS in Oxford. His PhD from Warwick University was in Philosophy. His areas of interest have been around philosophy and ethics in relation to ageing and dementia, which has included palliative care, capacity and best interests. He has published widely, including single author books such as Thinking Through Dementia (OUP 2011).
