Dr. Julia R. Berian earned a Bachelor of Arts, double majoring in Biology and History of Science, from the University of Chicago, and an MD from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, where she stayed to complete a general surgery residency. She also completed an M.S. in Health Services and Outcomes Research at Northwestern University and a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at the University of Minnesota. Currently, She is a General Surgery Resident at the University of Chicago Medicine.

During her general surgery residency, Dr. Berian spent three research years as a clinical scholar in residence at the American College of Surgeons (ACS), where she helped secure private foundation funding and helped lead a multidisciplinary stakeholder group, The Coalition for Quality in Geriatric Surgery. This work resulted in a new quality improvement initiative from the ACS, the Geriatric Surgery Verification Program, which aimed to improve surgical quality of care for older adults. The Department of Surgery is enthusiastic about Dr. Berian’s intent to build on her work in this area and establish an independently funded health services research program focused on improving cognitive and functional outcomes in older surgical patients.
