Dr. Burgis joined the faculty of University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 2004. She completed her medical education at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia, SC, in 1989, and her residency at Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia, SC, in 1993. Prior to her faculty appointment, she was in private practice in Columbia, SC for eleven years. Dr. Burgis' areas of interest include vulvar disorders, pediatric/adolescent gynecology, and maternal morbidity and mortality. Dr. Burgis was named Interim Chair of the USC School of Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2010 and Chair of the Department in October 2011. She continues to maintain a limited practice in comprehensive obstetrics and gynecology.

Dr. Burgis is an active member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP), the North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology (NASPAG), and the South Atlantic Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (SAAOG). She serves as President of SAAOG and as Vice President for ACOG District IV, South Carolina Section. Dr. Burgis is also a member of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) and is a reviewer for the Journal of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology. Dr. Burgis is actively involved in statewide efforts to improve birth outcomes and maternal mortality reporting in South Carolina.
