Prof. Juan J. Gomez-Reino Carnota has been elected the new elected president of the Spanish Society of Rheumatology, within the framework of the XLII National Congress of the SER that is being held in Barcelona. He will hold the position of President of the SER from May 2018 to May 2020.

Professor Juan J. Gomez-Reino is a researcher at the Ramon Domínguez Foundation at the Rheumatology Service of the Hospital Clínic of Santiago, and at the Clinical Research Center on Chronic Diseases (CICEC), HNS, Santiago. He is a graduate and doctor of Medicine from the Complutense University of Madrid. He completed his training in internal medicine and rheumatology, at the Clinical Hospital of Madrid, and the State University of New York, Stony Brook, NY, USA. He completed his medical studies at Dalahousie University, Halifax, NS, Canada, and at medical biochemistry at Turun Iliopisto, Turku, Finland. He was Head of the Rheumatology Service of the Hospital Clínico de Santiago and Professor of Medicine at the University of Santiago.

He previously served as Director of the Research Center and Section Chief of Rheumatology Hospital Doce de Octubre in Madrid. He collaborated in the creation and development of the National Agency for Evaluation and Prospective (ANEP) under the CICYT, MEC, and was responsible for the Medical Area of ​​ANEP at the start of its activity. He was a member of the Committee for the Safety of Medicinal Products for Human Use of the Spanish Agency for Medicines, and WHO Temporary Adviser for the toxic oil syndrome and the eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome. His interest in research has focused on the field of chronic inflammatory diseases mediated by immunity.
