Dr. Juan Gonzalez-Abraldes received his medical degree from the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain, completed a Fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Barcelona, and a postdoctoral fellowship at Yale University. He was awarded the Rising Star of European Gastroenterology award from the United European Gastroenterology Federation in 2012. He was a faculty member of the Barcelona Liver Unit until he was recruited to the University of Alberta in 2013. His research area is portal hypertension and cirrhosis.

Dr. Abraldes is the Director of the Liver Unit and the AHS Hepatology lead for the Edmonton Zone. He is also a member of the division’s Residence Program Committee. He served as the Chair of the Special Interest group in Portal hypertension of the American Society for the Study of the Liver (2017-2018), and currently serves as a committee member for the Baveno International Cooperation for the study of Portal Hypertension. He is the co-chair of the research committee for the Canadian Association for the Study of the Liver. He serves as Associate Editor in Hepatology and on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Hepatology and Liver Transplantation. He has co-authored the 2016 American Association for the Study of the Liver (AASLD) guidelines for the management of portal hypertension.
