Joshua Barnes DNP RN, CEN, NE-BC

Dr. Joshua Barnes serves as the Nurse Manager of the Emergency Department at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He leads a staff of 300 nurses and techs, balances a multi-million-dollar annual budget, and collaborates on a number of interdisciplinary committees. He has also served as a Nurse Manager for Inpatient Oncology and Medical/Surgical, Inpatient Psychiatry, and Outpatient Addictions nursing.

Dr. Barnes has led a number of quality improvement projects, including: improving perception of safety in the inpatient hospital setting; reducing the length of stay for patients receiving chemotherapy; decreasing CAUTI infections; and decreasing blood culture contamination in the Emergency Department. His doctoral area of focus surrounds microaggressions against LGBTQ+ hospital staff.

Dr. Barnes received his Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in Executive Leadership from the University of Pennsylvania. He also received his Master of Science in Nursing Administration from the University of Pennsylvania, with a minor in Quality Improvement and a post-master’s in Transformative Nursing Education. He received his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Drexel University.
