Joseph Purpura MD, MS

Dr Joseph Purpura is Senior Director and Head of Device Safety at Allergan Medical in Santa Barbara, CA. Formerly he was Director of Medical Device Safety for Baxter Healthcare Corporation in Deerfield, IL. He is an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine with over twenty-five years of faculty service at Prentice Women’s Hospital and Maternity Center. He is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He has served in various medical staff leadership roles including membership on the medical executive committee, department chair and vice-chair and patient safety coordinator of the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Northwestern-Lake Forest Hospital, Lake Forest, IL. He received a master’s degree in Patient Safety and Healthcare Quality from Northwestern University’s Institute for Healthcare Studies, the first program of its kind in the nation. Dr Purpura is a voting member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) committee working to prevent patient harm from small-bore device mis-connections. He is an ASQ member with certification as a Manager of Quality and Organizational Excellence.
