Joseph A. Murray received his medical degree in 1983 and doctorate in Medicine (thesis) in 1993 from the National University of Ireland in Galway. After further training in Dublin, he left Ireland for Iowa, where completed his fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Joseph A. Murray joined Mayo Clinic, Minnesota campus, in 1998, and established the celiac disease program at Mayo in 2002. Dr. Murray served as the director of Mayo's Esophageal Function Laboratory and esophagus section until 2004. He is currently a Professor of Medicine, at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, a clinician investigator, and a consultant in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and Department of Immunology. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Southern Denmark.

Joseph Murray's clinical activities focus on treating patients with celiac disease, achalasia, and esophageal diseases and disorders, including cancer. Dr. Murray's research programs have been sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and several foundations and industries, and include the clinical epidemiology of the celiac disease, the role of genetics in predicting disease, and the development of animal models for the disease and its associated dermatologic condition, and dermatitis herpetiformis.

Dr. Murray's research focuses on functional disorders, particularly the detection of atypical reflux and eosinophilic esophagitis. His work spans the spectrum from bench to population studies both in the United States and Europe, and he led the first clinical trials of novel methods for treating celiac disease. He has published more than 300 peer-reviewed scientific papers, chapters, and books on celiac disease and esophageal reflux.

Dr. Murray is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine and gastroenterology and the Royal College of Physicians, as well as the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) and Federation Licensing Examination (FLEX). He holds medical licensure in Minnesota, Iowa, Florida, and Arizona. He is a founder and immediate past president of the North American Society for the Study of Celiac Disease and vice-chair of the Intestinal Disease Section of the American Gastroenterological Association.
