Jose Martin-Moreno holds degrees from the University of Granada, Spain (MD, Ph.D.), and from Harvard University, US (MPH, DrPH). His main medical specialty is Preventive Medicine and Public Health, with a concentration in Epidemiology, Cancer and NCDs, Public Health Services, and Health Policy & Management. He is currently a full Professor of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Valencia, Director of the Medical Education and Quality Unit at the Valencian Clinical Hospital, Chair of the ASPHER Honours Committee​ & ​Director of the Andrija Stampar European Summer School of Public Health.

Dr. Martin-Moreno previously served as Director of Programme Management at WHO Europe and Director-General and Chief Medical Officer of Spain. Additionally, he has also advised the European Commission (through diverse working groups organized under the Directorate General for Health and Consumers, DG SANCO, and the Directorate General of Research, DG Research), the Scientific and Technical Office of the European Parliament, the European Institute of Oncology and the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Additionally, he is a Past-President of the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER) and has been a Senior Associate at the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health, US (joint appointment, part-time), Department of Health Policy and Management and Department of Epidemiology) for 18 years. He has published more than 300 scientific papers both nationally and internationally (including publications in The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, British Medical Journal, Annals of Oncology, European Journal of Cancer, and other high-impact peer-reviewed journals).

A Senior Advisor for the field of health systems and public health at the World Health Organization / Europe, Dr. Martin-Moreno is a Member of the European Academy of Cancer Sciences, a Core Faculty Member of the European School of Oncology, and of the European Code Against Cancer Scientific Committee. He is currently a Member of the ESMO European Policy and Global Policy Committees. He is also a Member of the National Board of the Spanish Association Against Cancer. Moreover, he is a member of Spain’s Royal Academy of Medicine and Honorary Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health of the UK (FFPH) and has also received, among other distinctions, the Andrija Stampar Award and medal for lifelong distinguished service to Public Health (awarded at the European Public Health Conference), and the Harvard Alumni Award of Merit (awarded by the School of Public Health of Harvard University).
